James "Sawyer" Ford: The tortured con man who comes to the island with an unsettled score, and leaves with a broken heart, arguably the most well developed character throughout the course of the show (and kudos to Josh Holloway for his apt abilities to tow the line between hardened scoundrel and sensitive soul so well.) While I briefly flirted with the idea of Clark Gable for the role, I quickly realized there was only ever one choice for Sawyer; Robert Mitchum! Mitchum would've been perfect as the mysterious southerner with and ax to grind and a soft spot for troubled women. And he definitely had the acting chops to pull off Sawyer's transition from rogue thief to genuine hero, with quick wit and comedic timing to boot. For examples of Mitchum's capabilities suited for this role I would cite Night of the Hunter, Man with the Gun, El Dorado, Thunder Road, Cape Fear, The Sundowners, and Out of the Past.
