John Locke

John Locke: The Island's man of faith, desperately seeking meaning and higher purpose if not greatness in his life.   Locke began this journey as a physically and emotionally crippled old man, seemingly destined to live the rest of his life bitter and alone.  That is until the crash of Oceanic Flight 815 where upon survival he not only realizes a revitalization of body but of mind and soul.  Suddenly with his legs no longer paralyzed Locke becomes determined to search for the truth of the Island and truth of self; he become the Island's enigmatic Sage, seemingly acting on his own capricious inclination to some, Wisely guiding lost souls to others.  The actor to portray Locke needs to bring a lot to the table here; Terry O'Quinn is arguably our finest actor, and completely owned the role more than any other cast member, anyone else is going to pale in comparison.  That is, except for the man who may have been the first half of the 20th century's best actor: Spencer Tracy.  Honestly in my mind, Spencer Tracy probably takes George Washington's spot on the "Mount Rushmore of Acting Legends" , to Terry O'Quinn's Lincoln; He came first and made what O'Quinn would later do possible, but there is no denying the Great Emancipator's top perch of Presidential greatness.  Tracy lacks the athleticism of  O'Quinn which is critical to the role but for anyone who would doubt Tracy's protean abilities I have a plethora of films to point to including, Bad Day at Black Rock, The Old Man and the Sea, The Last Hurrah, Captain Courageous, San Francisco and many more.
